Dental Codes - Explained in a simple and understandable way
Explanation of specific D numbers
D-0100 – D-0999
Codes 00001-09999 refer to all dental services that diagnose diseases and problems. Dental exams start from 01011, which refers to dental exams for children up to 3 years old. They increase in price and complexity to in-depth exams for maxillofacial and dental problems.
D-1000 – D-1999
Dental code II. Preventive is a code used in the CDT-2022 code on dental procedures and nomenclature 1. This code is used to describe preventive dental procedures, which are intended to prevent the onset or progression of dental diseases 2. Some examples of preventive procedures include oral evaluations, diagnostic imaging, screening, and prophylaxis.
D-2000 – D-2999
Dental codes 2000-2999 are part of the Restorative category of the CDT Code1. These codes represent the majority of dental procedures performed in a general dental practice on a day-to-day basis. The restorative codes are used to report procedures performed on primary or permanent dentition, with no differentiation between anterior and posterior teeth.
D-3000 – D-3999
The 3000 section of the CDT Code includes procedures related to maintenance of the pulp, regeneration of the pulp, removal of the pulp, and obturating the space where it previously existed 1. Some of the main challenges and questions that are typical to Endodontics involve how to code for procedures when they are done in more than one appointment
D-4000 – D-4999
The codes in this range are used to describe various periodontal procedures, both surgical and non-surgical, such as scaling and root planing, gingivectomy, osseous surgery, bone grafting, and more
D-5000 – D-5899
This category of service describes procedures that replace missing teeth in partially or completely edentulous patients. The stability and retention of a removable prosthesis may depend on both hard and soft tissue support, which may also include dental implants.
D-5900 – D-5999
These codes address a variety of procedures such as prosthetic devices that use existing teeth or the alveolar process as points of anchorage to aid in the stabilization of broken bones during healing.
D-6000 – D-6199
Dental codes 6000-6199 are used to describe implant services. This category includes separate entries for procedures that address surgical placement of the implant post, placement of connecting components when needed, and the final prosthetic restoration (single crowns, bridges or dentures).
